Ceremonial grade cacao is the most original, purest, and most powerful form of chocolate. It is a true superfood, free from additives and heavy processing, only naturally fermented and roasted. This plant medicine grows in humid rainforests, such as those in Brazil and Indonesia. The ceremonial cacao I use is grown in the rainforests of Bali. Balinese culture includes daily rituals, prayers, small offerings, and blessings performed several times a day. These rituals are also carried out at the roots of large cacao trees, blessing the entire growth process — and this, in my view, is what makes cacao grown in Bali especially unique.
The roots of ceremonial cacao reach back at least 5,300 years to the Amazon rainforest, where it was recognized as a gateway to divine connection — a gift of nature from the gods to humans. Indigenous peoples used cacao in everything from everyday moments to sacred rituals, in the matters of the heart. Even then, it was known as a heart-opening plant medicine that helps restore the sacred balance between humans and nature.
The wisdom of the spirit of cacao resonates deeply with the challenges of our modern world. When we often encounter life in a state of imbalance, cacao offers us a journey back to the heart, back to balance and wholeness. In ceremonies, the Spirit of cacao and Mother Earth work together, creating a held and loving space where it feels safe to return to the deepest wisdoms of the heart.
Ceremonial cacao is processed as naturally and minimally as possible, preserving its essential nutrients. Physical benefits of cacao include its rich antioxidant content (protecting the body’s cells from damage), flavonoids (supporting blood circulation to the brain and heart), high magnesium levels (e.g. muscle relaxation), high fiber content (supporting digestion), and a wide range of minerals (including iron, zinc, calcium, copper, and vitamin C).
Mental and emotional benefits include increased production of “feel-good” hormones (such as tryptophan), enhanced creativity (connecting the wisdom of the heart and womb), and increased levels of neurotransmitters often referred to as the “molecules of love,” supporting pleasure, safety, emotional balance, and improved mood. Spiritual and energetic benefits include a return to inner balance, letting go of what no longer serves you, opening to spiritual awakening, and strengthening intuition.
Ceremonial grade cacao is a completely natural product, but it is important to be mindful of its stimulating effects on the heart and circulatory system and to ensure adequate hydration. Caution is advised when combining cacao with antidepressant medication (especially SSRIs), as well as if you have high blood pressure or glaucoma. Caution is also recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. Always reach out in advance if you feel uncertain.
Ceremonial cacao can be beautifully combined with many other spiritual practices. This wonderful plant medicine should always be prepared ceremonially, in a state of love and presence, which activates its healing power. I personally enjoy it at home to open creativity and support intuitive work. I also host Full Moon Cacao ceremonies, where the theme of letting go aligns beautifully with the energy of the moment. I combine cacao with meditation, sound healing, writing, movement, painting — any form of creative expression. The possibilities and creativity with ceremonial cacao are limitless.
Every time I drink this delicious, heart-opening beverage, I feel a warm, loving energy filling my heart and, through it, my entire body. <3
